Aspiring Master Coaches

The purpose of coaching is to facilitate learning and self-initiated change; helping individuals to maximize their potential. ASPIRE will strengthen your coaching skills and offer leadership opportunities that make an impact in your community.

We are seeking professionals in Maricopa County with expertise and experience in positive youth development and core coaching competencies.

Free Coaching and Assessment Training:

Master Coaches complete intensive training and preparation before teaming up with an ASPIRE program. Additional professional development opportunities are regularly offered:

Youth Development Observational Tool (YDOT):

The Youth Development Observational Tool was developed using the eight essential elements of program quality outlined by Eccles and Gootman (2002). It specifically assesses the interactions between program staff and the young people they serve to improve overall program quality.

Using the ASPIRE online platform Master Coaches will complete the YDOT to:

  • Assess the interactions between program staff and the youth they serve
  • Identify strengths and areas for improvement
  • Jointly create a professional development plan with the Program Manager
  • Provide on-going coaching/feedback to your assigned programs

Network and Learning Communities:

ASPIRE Master Coaches form a network of highly skilled professionals working together to increase the knowledge, skills and expertise of individuals who work with and on behalf of children and youth in after school and youth programs in Maricopa County. Master Coaches engage in:

  • Monthly coaching supports from the ASPIRE team
  • Opportunities to network and attend professional development events with fellow coaches
  • Collaborate and build learning communities to support quality programs


Earn up to $3,600 per year! The ASPIRE stipend program is based on a two-year agreement. You will be eligible to work with up to three programs over the course of a 2-year term.

Qualified Candidates will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of positive youth development principles and effective strategies to apply them in youth development program
  • Complete all Master Coach training and preparation requirements including: approximately 9 hours of online training; participate in 3 online webinars; and attend a 2.5 day in-person training in Phoenix
  • Attend the Master Coach orientation and program’s orientation to launch initiative with assigned programs­
  • Commit to an average of 2-4 hours per week (some weeks involve more time, some weeks involve less) over the course of your coaching assignment
  • Ability to make at least a 2 year commitment to the project (contract begins June 1st and are renewable each year)
  • Possess strong interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal, and ability to form effective working relationships with others to achieve common goals
  • Experience in coaching staff or demonstrated leadership, communication and coaching skills
  • Have access throughout the project to a computer with high-speed internet, and telephone to complete contact with programs via email, telephone, and/or Skype
  • Successfully pass all employment screening and background checks required by University of Arizona
  • Be a resident of Maricopa County, AZ
